In "The Party" by Herman Wouk, the protagonist Herbie is on a quest to talk to Lucille, the girl he likes. Herbie often imagines himself in a fantasy world with Lucille Glass, who has now, in real life invited him to a party that she is hosting. At the Party, Herbie and Lucille have a conversation that doesn't end well; Herbie's hair gets messed up and Lucille can't stop laughing and runs away. When Herbie finally gathers up his courage to go and find her, Lucille is dancing with another boy and seems to not care about Herbie anymore. Herbie is very hurt by this.
In my opinion, the most difficult situation that Herbie faces is when he walks out to see that Lucille is dancing with someone else. Herbie is so shocked about this and doesn't know what to do. He just had a nice conversation with her and now all of sudden, just because his hair was sticking out, she ran away laughing. Lucille wasn't that sweet girl Herbie had dreamed about. If I was in this situation I probably would have reacted the same way that Herbie did, shocked and sad.
